ROD HARRISON PERFORMS LORD BUCKLEY
AT NEW YORK CITY’S BOWERY POETRY CLUB

New York, NY: Theater Grottesco ensemble member Rod Harrison will perform his interpretation of the infamous Lord Buckley at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City Sunday, April 12, 2009, 7pm.

Lord Buckley, an entertainer best known for his "hipsemantic" translations of Bible stories, Shakespeare soliloquies and historical figures, performed his scandalous and clever monologues in Chicago and New York speakeasies and nightclubs, made appearances with Ed Sullivan and created a cult following that has lasted decades after his death in 1960. Buckley’s style combined scat, black jive, and the King's English to create riveting performances such as The Nazz, The Hip Gahn and The Bad Rapping of the Marquis de Sade.

On April 12th, Rod Harrison, along with Steven Ben Israel, David Amram, Tom Calagna, and Robert Dick will invoke the spirit of Lord Buckley in a celebration of words, music and the great comedian's art & life at one of the nation’s premiere clubs for spoken word: The Bowery Poetry Club in New York City.

Rod Harrison is an actor, comedian, dancer and emcee. In addition to his work with Theater Grottesco, Rod has performed all over Santa Fe and regionally with the Dandelion Dance Theater and at the Public Theater in New York.

“There's a new cat on the scene that is turning more than a few wigs, heating a few lobes and popping more than a few peepers with his gasser of an interpretation of The Great Cat. Rod Harrison’s interpretation of Lord Buckley is filled with equal parts of power and nuance. He's got the chops, beloveds, so dig him deeply.

@ Actor Rod Harrison performs an evening of Lord Buckley material.

The original "slam poet", Hipster, Beatnik, Jazz Monologist Lord Buckley was a man born before his time. A product of vaudeville and the early jazz scene, Buckley performed his monologues in the "hipster" language of the time, telling the stories of heroes such as Jesus Christ (The Nazz) and the Marquis de Sade (The Bad Rapping of the Marquis de Sade) and Shakespeare with a reverence and humor uniquely his own. A true virtuoso performer almost forgotten in our time, Lord Buckley has influenced artists such as The Beatles, Henry Miller, and David Bowie to name just a few.

Rod Harrison, company member of Santa Fe's own Theater Grottesco, inhabits the skin of His Royal Hipness, Lord Buckley, and performs an evening of his material as the master himself would have done. No boring biographical material (that would be a show in itself), just the words and ideas of a man so full of love and poetic humor that everyone around him became a instant convert to his royal court.
